The work that KDA-DWR does through its floodplain management program is centered around property protection and insurance. As a result, our work involves educating about flood insurance and building standards, training surveyors and floodplain managers, and creating new flood maps. However, there is absolutely nothing more important than protecting lives.
We should all be aware of flood hazards regardless of where we live and remember that all flood events are not alike. Some floods develop slowly, over a period of days. While flash floods or dam breaks develop quickly, sometimes in minutes, and can sweep away most things in their path.
It is especially important to know of these hazards if you live in a low-lying area, near water, or downstream from a dam. The majority of flood-related deaths are caused by people in a hurry trying to get to safety and attempting to drive through moving water.
Get real-time road updates and find out if roads are closed due to flooding at the Kansas Department of Transportation's KanDrive website. Stay apprised of severe weather warnings and flash flooding using the National Weather Service Radar Map.
