Groundwater Management Districts in Kansas

Established under the authority of the Kansas Groundwater Management District Act, there are five GMDs in Kansas.

K.S.A. 82a-1044 Priority Areas of Concern

K.S.A. 82a-1044, enacted by the Kansas Legislature in 2023, required the board of directors of each GMD to identify priority areas of concern and submit a report to the Chief Engineer, by July 1, 2024, detailing their priority areas of concern, the nature of such concern, and how the areas were identified and developed. The GMDs must then conduct public education and outreach in each of their priority areas so that the board may develop an action plan to reasonably address the identified concerns based on input from the water right owners and users within the area. Such action plans must be submitted to the Chief Engineer by July 1, 2026.
